TORONTO, ONTARIO — MONDAY, MAY 18, 0904 HOURS (EST)

Busy at his work desk, Spencer couldn’t get the conversation with Roberts four days earlier out of his mind. Why the CIA? And in Canada? What did the Arrow have to do with them? The desk phone rang. He let it ring twice while he finished a sentence on his typewriter.

“Ben Spencer,” he said.

“Mr. Spencer. I’m calling from Ottawa on behalf of the prime minister.” The voice was formal, lawyer-like. He had to be a politician close to the prime minister.

“Is that so? What can I do for you?”

“It seems you’ve done enough already.”

“Sorry, am I missing something here?”

“The prime minister takes offense at many of your articles, especially the one stating that he was a communist. Or a pinko as you so explicitly put it.”

“Oh, for the love of Mike. Sir,” Spencer spoke loud enough for his office people to hear, “I did not say that the prime minister was a communist. I said that his party branded him a commie after he blocked...”

“I’ll have you know that most of his colleagues congratulated him on the stand that he took.”

“Most? That’s not the story I heard.”

“You also implied that the prime minister concentrates too much on the little guy, the farmer, the average Canadian. Let me point out, Mr. Spencer, that if it weren’t for the average Canadian there would be no Canada. The farming industry, not the big corporations, is the backbone of this nation.”

“You think so.” Spencer looked around at a crowd of work associates who were beginning to gather near his desk. He winked and went on. “Please inform the prime minister for me that I know something about the average Canadian myself because I saw the average Canadian die on the beaches at Normandy. I saw the average Canadian being pulled out of bomber turrets, minus an arm or leg. I saw the average Canadian fight for this great country of ours with everything he had. They’re the people that made this country what it is. They’re the backbone of this country. And they’re from all walks of life. Not just farmers.”

“The prime minister feels you have no business saying the things you do.”

“Oh, does he?” Spencer’s voice began to rise. “You can tell the prime minister from me that he can take a flying leap at the moon.”

“I will, but he won’t like it.”

“Tough. By the way, why did he scrap the Arrow?”

“You can’t get the plane out of your system, can you?”

“No, I cannot. I never will. By the way, it’s an airplane. Not a plane. Get it right.”

“The Arrow was good, but this is a new age.”

“I know. The missile age. I don’t buy it, pal. Your leader doesn’t have a sniff about military matters. Hell, he only got as far as boot camp in World War I where he picked up a bout of measles and got sent home.” The people around Spencer snickered. “And we’re trusting our military policy with a man of that background.
